Fish and flowers

[Co-author] Brian was the son of Henry Thomas and Phyllis Risbridger (155/158). He was born at Loveday Street Hospital, Birmingham on 25th November 1932. He was educated in his home town of Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands (then Warwickshire), winning a scholarship to Bishop Vessey’s Grammar School. He left school to become an apprentice draftsman and then a photographic assistant, from whence he joined the Royal Navy and served from 1951 - 1960 a total of nine years. During this time he had met and married Elizabeth Younghusband, she died in 1982 of cancer after thirty years of marriage. Brian remarried again in 1983 to Anne Tolhurst (née Sweeney). He worked as an estimator for the Wear Glass Co., Sunderland after de-mob and then as an agent for the Prudential Assurance Company in South Shields, later he became warehouse manager for S. Newman Ltd and had several other stores and warehousing positions.

Caer Urfa

He served in the Territorial Army with the Northumberland Hussars for a five year period. He had a partnership in South Tyneside Aquatics, a tropical and coldwater fish business, until he became disabled in 1984 through arthritis and spondilosis. Selling his house at 13 Chesterton Road, he and Anne moved out into the Cheviot Hills to a village called Glanton, but returned to South Shields in 1992 to sheltered accommodation at 11 Johnson Street. Brian became very interested in tropical fish and kept and bred many species. He progressed to become an “A” class judge for the Federation of British Aquatic Societies (F.B.A.S.) and was eventually awarded the ‘Yellow Badge’ for meritorious service and was made Vice-Chairman and President of Caer Urfa Aquarist Society. Later he took up the study of the local flora and gave many slide/talks in writing and painting and had stories read on BBC Radio and articles and poems published.

In around 1970 Brian and Cyril Risbridger got in touch with each other. Cyril had been researching the Risbridger family and Brian had a computer. so together they produced the first version of The Risbridger Story on Brian's dot matrix printer.

The document (which was never published) is available in the Risbridger Library.
