A brief biography

Trombone player


John or Jack as he was better known joined the Army as a bandboy and studied the trombone. He served with the South Staffordshire Regiment on the North West Frontier in India and at the outbreak of WWII was transferred back to the UK where the regiment was formed into the 1st Airborne Division. He was posted to North Africa in the Desert campaign and was attached to the glider division.

Invasion of Sicily

Jack was one of 252 men drowned in Operation Ladbroke, the invasion of Sicily in 1943, his glider being released too early and going down into the sea during the night time landings. He had attained the rank or Corporal. His body was never found.


MEMORIAL


Jack is still missing. His effects, including all his music, was buried beneath an apple tree in the garden of an alms house at Walmley, near Sutton Coldfield, now West Midlands.
