George Risbridger

1788 — 19/01/1867
A brief biography

Snower Hill Farm

At the time of the 1843 field survey, George Risbridger, the fourth of Benjamin Risbridger's seven sons, was the tenant of Snower Hill Farm. The farm was owned by Henry Goulburn who lived at Betchworth House and was the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and comprised of 162 acres bordering the River Mole. He also farmed Tomkins Farm in partnership with his younger brother John.

The land includes the Betchworth side of the Rice Bridge after which the family was reputedly named at least 700 years ago. The name snowerhill is of Saxon origin and probably means brushwood hill, therefore it could have provided the resources to make the Ricebridge, since the word rice or ris also means brushwood.

Corner Farm

Some time between 1843 and 1851 the family moved from Snower Hill Farm in Betchworth to Corner Farm in Banstead, a farm of 256 Acres which employed 5 men and 3 boys.
