As a young man, he was employed as a coachman/carman at the Royal Stables in London.

Raymond and Gladys lived at 286 Church Road Mitcham where Raymond was a decorator.
They emigrated to New Zealand on the Remuema in 1926.
Amongst his interests, apart from his family, was his garden and bowls.
