Esther Mary Risbridger


Daughter of Solomon Risbridger and Susan Smart. .

Born in Guildford, Surrey in 1896, the fifty-ninth year of the reign of Queen Victoria, and died aged ninety-eight in Guildford, Surrey in the forty-third year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II

The Milliner


Esther was the only daughter of Solomon Risbridger and Susan Smart. She was baptised into the Strict Baptist Chapel in the Bars, Guildford and went to chapel every Wednesday and Sunday.

No Mod Cons

Her great nephew wrote an account of her life (now in the Library) and of note was that her home above the Milliner's shop had, even in 1985, no running water and no electricity and only an outside toilet, however she did eventually allow for a single high level bar heater in the kitchen. She bathed in a tin bath in the kitchen every Thursday.
Her Milliner's shop was immaculate and she ran it until she was 90.
