A brief biography

Maurice Risbridger

Son of Sydney Risbridger and Annie Chatt. .

Born in 1918, the eighth year of the reign of King George V, and died aged ninety-two in the fifty-eighth year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II

Dunkirk, Tunisia, Twyford

Maurice was born in Gosport in 1918 and moved to Twyford aged seven. Sporting promise was clear early and Maurice represented Hampshire in long jump at 14 years of age. He first played for the Twyford team in 1937 until the outbreak of war when he was called up.

Maurice was part of the British expeditionary Force that evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940 and he later served in Tunisia with the Hampshire Regiment. He was taken prisoner after the Battle of Tebourba, a four day battle with heavy casualties and was flown in a German aircraft to a POW camp in Italy. When his Italian guards deserted, he took a train to Milan and then got home safely.

After the war he played cricket for Twyford and then joined Hyde Ramblers which subsequently became Winchester Cricket club. A plumbing and heating engineer with local firm Bruce and Partners, he played in a Winchester select side against Hampshire and scored 50 and was a member of a very successful team under the captaincy of the late John Macey.
Morris played representative cricket for Winchester and district cricket clubs Association from 1948 to 1957. In 1970 he returned to Twyford Cricket Club and headed batting and bowling for three successive seasons.
