George Risbridger


Born around 1810, the fiftieth year of the reign of King George III, and died aged thirty-three in the seventh year of the reign of Queen Victoria

Deported to Tazmania


George John Risbridger was a gardener in Reigate, convicted in 1829 for stealing a watch and chain and some money.
Sentenced to 7 years deportation at Surrey Quarter Sessions, in 1830 sailed on the John to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) with 200 other convicts

Port Arthur

George was deported to the Port Arthur penal colony in Tasmania and was sentenced to 7 years. According to prison records, on July 3 1837 he was accused of "dilatoriness in going to his work" and was sentenced to 48 hours solitary confinement.


On March 12 1840 he was absent without leave and was then found hiding in the premises of W Bons [sic] under suspicious circumstances, as a result of which he was sentenced to a further 12 years hard labour.


He died four years later in 1844.
