The Risbridger Story

Joane Steere

Born in 1578, the twentieth year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, and died aged eighty in 1659, the first year of the Lord Protector Richard Cromwell

The Steere family of Wotton

Joane Steere claims in her 1658 Will to be of Wotton and the witness John Steere might be her brother or nephew.

Jayes Park in Wotton, home of the Steere family to this day, was acquired by Thomas Steere in 1609 when Joane was already over 50. Thomas Steere was her brother, and according to the chapter on The Steeres of England in A RECORD OF THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN STEERE OF PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND, Thomas died in 1645, giving most of his property to John Steere, son of his brother Harry. He also had a brother named John, so Joane had both a brother and a nephew named John.
