William Risbridger

1713 — 1794
A brief biography

The last Clockmaker

William Risbridger was the last of four generations of Risbridger clockmakers in Dorking and Brentford.

His first wife Sarah Dudley died only ten years after they married in 1740. He then remained a widower for much of his life, only marrying again in 1790 at the age of 77.

The Apprentices

We know that William took on at least three apprentices in Dorking:

Robert Dorset, son of Sarah, apprentice clockmaker on 7/11/1745 for 7 years and the fee of £15.

James Hodges, son of James, apprentice clockmaker on 4/10/1752 for 7 years and the fee of £15-15s.

Peter Ratcliffe, apprentice clockmaker on 21/11/1762 for 7 years and the fee of £15. He married Mary Rose, the niece of William's wife Sarah.

The Church Warden

It is believed that this William Risbridger was Churchwarden for the Dorking Parish Church. There is a golden ball in Dorking Museum which once surmounted the church tower, and engraved on a band around the ball is recorded, William Risbridger, Church-Warden 1779
